Today is the 101st observance of Veterans Day - a time when we remember our veterans and the sacrifices they made. Remembering is an important part of being an American. I am dismayed when we have political leaders who seem to have no real historical memory or sense of history and the sacrifices and alliances that we made because of our wonderful gift of freedom. Places throughout the world where we made alliances are safer and better because of the United States of America. We are safer and better because of our veterans.
I did not come from a military family. However, over the years, I have grown more and more respectful and grateful for the sacrifices of our veterans. In the Church, we call those who sacrificed for their faith "martyrs" or "saints." We are grateful for our martyrs and saints. We are grateful for our veterans. May we always take care of them, pray to them and for them, and never forget those who gave us an example of the best of our nation and the best of our Church.
TODAY'S GRATITUDE: For those who made such significant sacrifices for our nation and our faith.
