It's ok to smile, even to laugh during Lent. Since I have been writing some rather long blogs lately, I'm wimping out (or having mercy on you) with only two short simple points in today's blog.
The first is a prayer, said to be used by Pope Francis, was written by St. Thomas More. It is not a prayer that will have you doubled up with laughter. But it gives a gentle perspective to the work of the day - and some good perspective if we take ourselves seriously (one of my greatest strengths or whatever!). Here is the Prayer for Good Humor:
Grant me, O Lord, good digestion, and also something to digest.
Grant me a healthy body, and the necessary good humor to maintain it.
Grant me a simple soul that knows not boredom, grumblings, sighs and laments, nor excess of stress, because of what obstructing thing called "I."
Grant me, O Lord, sense of good humor.
Allow me the grace to be able to take a joke, to discover in life a bit of joy, and to be able to share it with others.
America Magazine has a wonderful website with articles and videos that are first rate. (www.americamagazine.org) I came across an interview on their site that Jim Martin conducted with Stephen Colbert. It is my kind of humor and both of them embody an approach to religion that makes them powerful messengers of God's joy in all that they do. Watch Colbert talk about this faith.
