People usually read more during the summer. The pace is somewhat slower. It is a time to catch up on books that are on a pile (or on your Kindle or IPad or Nook) - and all unread. It is also a time when it may be easier to think. Some people even like to read on the beach books that could, shall we say, not be called "highbrow."
Obviously, we should all read the Bible. I continue to study the Bible. I have never stopped learning and hopefully growing in both my appreciation and knowledge of the Scriptures. Easiest way - start with the Gospels, read a chapter a day. Easily manageable. Then think about what you have read. Apply it to your life. Realize that when we read the Bible, we are growing closer to God. Not complicated, easy to do. Well worth it.
In my opinion, the best spiritual writer today is a Jesuit (Go figure!) Jim Martin. Jim is the Culture Editor at America Magazine and has quickly become one of the most popular spiritual guides in our Church. Jim went to a well-known theological school, Wharton, before he started studying for the Jesuits. His writing is practical, not esoteric. Take a chance and read both or even one of these books:
The Jesuit Guide to Almost Everything: A Spirituality for Real Life - This has the potential to touch every area of your life.
Another tremendous book is My Life with the Saints - These are the saints important to Jim. These saints are real, tragic, funny, and above all people with whom we can identify. Publisher's Weekly named it one of the top books of 2006.
If you feel that others would like askance at you while on the beach reading these books, then simply cut off a cover from a trashy novel and paste it over the cover of these books. In this way, your reputation is intact and you become closer to God at the same time!
